(RECIPE UPDATE) Cocktail Questions: Let's Win a Margarita Competition
Never forget the Cynar.
Hey folks, apologies for the double email tonight, but shortly after I sent out this evening’s Cocktail Questions newsletter, I realized that I somehow forgot the Cynar in the final recipe!
One never likes an error in a recipe, but this one is especially embarrassing given Cynar’s centrality to this newsletter’s worldview.
How could I forget the Cynar?! Somehow I forgot the Cynar.
So sorry for the mistake. I’ve already corrected the recipe in the web version.
However, for those who read this primarily in email, the corrected recipe is:
Bittersweet Spicy Mezcal Pineapple Margarita
5 drops 20 percent saline solution* (or a pinch of salt)
5 drops Bittermen’s Hellfire Shrub
½ ounce agave syrup
½ ounce lime juice
1 ½ ounces pineapple juice1
¾ ounce Cynar (don’t forget it like I did!)
1 ½ ounces mezcal, preferably Del Maguey Vida
INSTRUCTIONS
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker.
Add ice, then shake until thoroughly combined, about 10-12 seconds.
Strain into a rocks glass over a big hunk of ice.
*20 percent saline solution: Combine one part salt with four parts water in a saucepan. Heat on medium low, stirring occasionally, until fully integrated. Let cool, then bottle in an eye-dropper. Shelf stable, keeps for many months.
Maybe you didn’t forget it and were just negotiating.
Cynar newbie question: at my local stores I see a 33 proof Cynar and a 70 proof bottle. Which should I pick up TOMORROW! This recipe looks delightful.
