I went back to this article after having a frozen ‘Little Black Dress’ at The Violet Hour in Chicago last night. That was an amazing drink unlike anything I have had before. I’m inspired to try this recipe now!
Oh man, I am jealous. I have still never been to The Violet Hour — I need to spend more time in Chicago! — but I’ve been working out of the bar’s new book (The Bartender’s Manifesto) this summer, and it’s great.
I bought the book as well and am loving it. Like reading your newsletter, it’s an excuse to buy cool new bottles of liquor to make great cocktails. My favorite so far is the Art of Smoke.
I really love your newsletter. Just converted to an annual subscription. Thank you!
I liked this. The Averna comes through in a very nice way, and brings the gin along with it. I used the Starbucks 2:1 concentrate. It was just fine here, but I ordered the Java House 4:1, hoping that it produces a better crema for the martini.
We are taking a long weekend in Nashville in June, and made reservations for the Fox weeks ago. Really looking forward to it.
I waited outside for the Fox, and it was worth it. The entire menu page of Old Fashioneds — obviously I did not get to try all of them, but it made my evening.

Definitely worth a trip.
