I understand the insistence on homemade grenadine, and do so often enough. But sometimes laziness wins out. Libor & Co make a real grenadine that I think works pretty well.
Yes!!!!!!!!! You have tackled my all-time favorite cocktail at last! (It was the first drink I had after turning 21, and although the variation I was served in a Denny's bar all those years ago wasn't great, the bones of something great were clearly there, and I have been chasing Pink Lady perfection ever since.) I was going to make my spouse and I Jack Roses on Valentine's Day, but nope. Now we're trying this variation.
I actually lied a bit - I had a Last Word but with grapefruit juice instead of lime. I discovered that variation a year or so ago when I had no limes and really like it. Also, if you like that drink, our gracious host would love to tell you about… https://cocktailswithsuderman.substack.com/p/a-familiar-four-part-whiskey-sour
Made one of these for halftime (with a little Bolivar bitters on top b/c I feel like eggwhite always needs a little bitters), and it was nice! But I think the Jack Rose is just a better drink.

Oh, that's good to know.
I don't think I've tried the Libor version -- will have to add it to my list.

I just made this drink. Delicious!
Just here to encourage people not to skip the orange flower water—it adds a really unique floral background note to all the grenadine drinks
I’ve made the PDT spec and recall thinking that it was solid:
- 1.5 oz. gin
- 0.5 oz. apple brandy
- 0.75 oz. lemon juice
- 0.5 oz. simple syrup
- 0.5 oz. grenadine
- 1 egg white
I made this with Calvados tonight since it’s what I had. Lovely and luscious!
This is how I know it's Friday and I'm reading Peter: "But the drink as we know it today comes from the recipe published by Jaques Straub in 1913..."
Just had myself a Last Word...my wife is not a fan of it. Nor Valentine's Day, thankfully!
Wow! Never heard of the Last Word. Looked it up. Fantastic! .. and finally found some use for my Chartreuse.

Every Last Word variant on this blog is fabulous. Don’t sleep on the Naked and Famous—it’s become one of my favorites https://cocktailswithsuderman.substack.com/p/a-pair-of-mezcal-quartets
Wonder if grenadine syrup can also be made with sous vide?
