This was basically my bar a few years ago (though the rye was Russell’s reserve), plus a bottle of reposado tequila, a bottle of cointreau, and a bottle of amaretto that I barely ever opened. Then one day I thought it would be exciting to make a good mai-tai, and long story short I wonder sometimes now if I need a bigger house😂

I’ve been holding off on chartreuse because it’s pretty darn expensive (and I seem to always be able to talk myself into another bottle of bourbon or rye). Which is more versatile - green or yellow?

I personally use the green a lot more than the yellow, and since I almost always use it in 1/2 oz or 1/4 oz portions it lasts a long time. Of course, if you read the Erlender detective series (set in Iceland) you might start drinking it on the rocks.

I only had a bottle of green for a long time (until someone showed me the recipe for Laphroaig Project), while expensive, it lasts a very long time since most recipes only require a small amount.

Good article. Your five bottles are at the core of my bar, but if I had to hold it to five for my family, I'd substitute brandy and Cointreau for gin and Campari. If I added rum (I'd let my wife and daughter pick which kind), Dolon dry vermouth, and Wild Turkey 101 to make a total of ten, that would pretty well cover the bottles I have to replenish most regularly.
